About the Role

Foster Care is a Family Home care model that provides safe, nurturing, community-based, shared living arrangements for children and youth with diverse abilities. The service is provided through you, the contractors, who welcome a child/youth into their home, offering a warm, inclusive environment and customized, person-centred support.

A supported person will live in unique and varied family care arrangements such as sharing a house, or an apartment or living in a suite within the home. This model of support creates opportunities for natural relationships to develop and promotes the full citizenship of the person through inclusion within their community.

A Foster family may assist with life skills, meal preparation, personal care, medication administration, relationship building, and accessing community resources. The key to a successful, long-term arrangement is matching a person with a Foster Family based on a variety of factors including personality, lifestyle, and interests.

PCCR collaborates with MCFD social workers, Family and other professionals in the care team to determine the ideal caregivers for the supported children/youth. Often picking the family and environment that best fits their unique interest, support requirements and preferences.
What we look for in our Foster Family:
  • Commitment to the values and principles of inclusive community living
  • Previous experience fostering and supporting a person with diverse abilities
  • Sincere desire to provide a stable, safe, comfortable, and inclusive home
  • Good problem solving/communication skills and the ability to be flexible, adaptable, organized, and accepting
  • Available space/room in the house to welcome a child/youth. (children are needing to be on the same floor as the adults in the house)
Foster Family candidates undergo a comprehensive screening process which includes reference and criminal record checks as well as the SAFE home study. Foster Care arrangements are monitored regularly and ongoing training and support are provided, including MANDT, Medication Administration, privacy training, First Aid/CPR re-certification, and more.
